In addition to my usual lust for pitchers, I have figured out over the years I must have something for men from Virginia (as you’ll see later in the season, I promise) and Thunder Bay, ON, Canada (but that’s hockey-related). Furthermore, it seems to be big, sturdy third basemen from Virginia. So for this weekend, you’ll want to keep an eye on…
Mark Reynolds, 3B
Arizona Diamondbacks, #27
Mark is actually a native Kentuckian, but moved to Virginia Beach, VA. Hell, they even gave him his own day! (July 7, 2009 in case you’re too lazy to click the link, like I usually am.) He’s everything I love – muscular, tall, blonde, and the quintessential all-American, baseball-and-mom’s-apple-pie boy. To me he’s built like the absolute love of my baseball life, and fellow Virginian third baseman David Wright (extravaganza to follow later!) although he doesn’t make nearly as many errors. Other players from Mark & David’s immediate geographic area include the Upton brothers BJ & Justin, Michael Cuddyer, and Ryan Zimmerman, of the nearby Washington Nationals.
He made his ML debut May 16, 2007. Later that year, our Diamondbacks poster boy was fined for saying some not-so-nice things about fans in Pittsburgh and Cleveland. In terms of his play, he’s Ryan Howard. Swinging for the fences a la Pat Burrell is what he does best. In fact, if he wasn’t so sexy, I think I would just rely on referring to him as “Strikeouts McGee.” He is the definition of go big or go home, breaking Ryan’s record for strikeouts in the regular season in 2008. Guess what? He broke his own record for strikeouts in the regular season in 2009, striking out a whopping 223 times! I guarantee you will either slam your head into your sweaty, anxious palms, or spill your nachoes on the person in front of you in joy when he blasts a homer out of the park.
It remains to be seen if he’ll break his own strikeout record for the third year running, but while we’re waiting on those results, let’s take a gander at some of the gorgeousness that is Mark Reynolds. Oh…and he’s also got a donk. I think I may have to make that a qualification..!
